1. Overview of the GOL Web Accelerator

1.                               How does the GOL Web Accelerator work?

The GOL web accelerator accelerates your Internet access through proprietary text and image compression, content caching and other network optimizations.

2.                               Will I benefit from using The GOL Web Accelerator?

If you have a slow Internet connection (such as a dial-up or wireless connection) with bandwidth of less than 300Kbps, you will experience a significant degree of acceleration using The GOL web accelerator.

3.                               What types of content does The GOL Web Accelerator speed up?

The GOL Web Accelerator significantly speeds up web page access.  To achieve this speed up, proprietary lossless compression is applied to text, html, xml, javascript and style sheets.  Proprietary image compression is applied to gif images, jpeg images and Flash content.

The GOL web accelerator also accelerates email traffic (POP3 and SMTP)using lossless compression.

The GOL does NOT speed up file downloads (over FTP or file sharing programs), streaming audio/video and HTTPS (secure web sites).

5.                               How do I start The GOL Web Accelerator?

The GOL Web Accelerator is launched automatically every time Windows starts. You do not have to launch it manually.

The GOL Web Accelerator icon appears in the Windows system tray to show that it is operating in the background.

6.                               How do I change the image quality for a particular image?

Right-clicking on an image within Internet Explorer and selecting "Show Original Image" allows you to view the original image.  Selecting "Show All Original Images" allows you to view all original images on the entire web page.

7.                               How do I change the image quality setting for all images?

Right-click on the GOL Web Accelerator taskbar icon and select "Settings". Select the "Image Quality" tab. Adjust the slider bar to the desired image quality setting. Press OK to save the changes.

8.                               How do I use Internet Explorer with the GOL Web Accelerator?

Internet Explorer is automatically configured to use The GOL Web Accelerator.  Use Internet Explorer as you normally would.

9.                               How do I use other browsers with The GOL Web Accelerator?

Netscape Navigator is automatically configured to use The GOL Web Accelerator.  Use Netscape as you normally would.

For other browsers such as Opera and Mozilla, The GOL Web Accelerator works with any web browser that allows you to specify an HTTP proxy. You must set the HTTP proxy host to be "127.0.0.1" and the port number to be the local listening port of the The GOL Client (5400 by default). Consult your browser's documentation for information on how this can be done.

10.                            Does the GOL Web Accelerator speed up email access?

Yes, The GOL automatically accelerates your email traffic (POP3 and SMTP) for all popular email clients such as Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express and Netscape Mail.  Other email clients should work transparently as well.

11.                            Where do I go if I have problems with The GOL Web Accelerator?

If you are unable to resolve your problem then contact our support staff.

12.                            Does the GOL Web Accelerator speed up my secure (HTTPS) transactions such as web banking?

The GOL Web Accelerator does not accelerate secure transactions. Secure web sites will continue to work by bypassing the acceleration component. If you have a Secure application that you would like accelerated, inquire about the GOL Secure product.

13.                            What operating systems can the GOL Web Accelerator be installed on?

The GOL Web Accelerator can be installed on any of the following operating systems:

§                                 Windows 98

§                                 Windows 98SE

§                                 Windows Millennium Edition (Windows ME)

§                                 Windows NT 4.0

§                                 Windows 2000

§                                 Windows XP 

The GOL Web Accelerator requires at least Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape 4.0 or any later version of either browser.

Note that the GOL Email Acceleration component requires Windows 98 and above, and that the GOL Pop-up Blocker component requires Internet Explorer 5.0 and above.

Newer versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer are available free of charge through Microsoft.

For Windows 95 users: Currently, Microsoft does not permit Windows 95 users to install Internet Explorer 6 or greater, however, Internet Explorer 5.5 is available.

14.                            What system requirements are necessary to use the GOL Web Accelerator?

The recommended system requirements for the GOL Web Accelerator are a Pentium 200MHz with 64MB of RAM and at least 5MB of hard-disk space.

Regardless, The GOL Web Accelerator will work within your current system configuration to provide you with the best content acceleration.
