Excerpts from TWCJ Aug 99 issue
Dog, Cat Protection Act Now in Congress

Legislation has been introduced in both the House and the Senate that would ban the sales and importations of furs made from the pelts of cats and dogs. William V. Roth Jr. (R-Del.) and Gerald D. Kelczka (D-Wisc.) expressed, the bill's sponsors, expressed dismay at the fact that 2 million cats and dogs were killed annually for their fur, some for items found in the U.S. Stores. ( THIS NUMBER IS WAY UNDER FACTUAL NUMBERS, the numbers range in reality into excesses of TEN MILLION a yr, in our dogs and cats, not even including all fur bearing animals such as lynx, wolf, otter, coyotee, and many of our natural resources, our precious wildlife.) The information came to light through an investigation last year by the Humane Society of the United States. Investigators discovered sources in China and the Philippines and reported on brutal animal slaughters. Under the bill titled the Dog and Cat Protection Act of 1999, each violation could result in a $25,000 fine and up to a year in prison.
