Big Inland 2000/Day One/Monday/August 14, 2000

No one was late for work today. This is not to say one did not encounter some traffic and delay. 93 C-boats launched mostly without a hitch to make a scheduled 9:30am start north of the club on a south wind. As the fleet congregated in the starting area, mother nature took a break by easing-up enough to necessitate a postponement. At about 11am the fleet was sent in for lunch. Meanwhile further west into the Fontana end of Geneva Lake, eighteen of the M16’s enjoyed a typical localized breeze for their first race on schedule. Sailing great Jane Pegel in her old familiar I-19 came from behind to best Jamie Baker in V-85 on the final leg. The I-20 Class, greatly east of the middle course into Geneva’s "Narrows", were last to get what wind there was. They stayed out there all day. M-20’s with the traditional chute design bested the easier assymetrical-kite rigs. Kevin Caulfield leads the thirteen boat fleet with 1,2; Dayton Walker comes second with 4,1. When the M16s resumed racing after lunch, Eric Hood came-back to win it for second in the standings behind Jane.

By 1:40pm the C’s were away for their Race One. Wind slightly southwest, tending first more west, then back east as the top mark took two moves to keep it all square as possible with 20 degree shifts prevalent in 5-12 mph. Sailing across the lake kept the W 2 ½ legs short at about 1-1 ¼ mile, so one had better make the start count - if the large fleet wasn’t incentive enough. Jim Beltz, UM-177 rounded first, pursued by E-99 (Chris Pinahs), UM-11 (Graham Erwin), B-101 (Joe Bitter), C-52 (Greg Stauffer), B-2 (Peter Keck), then P-1 (Jerry Huse), A-77 (that Baldus-guy), UM-5, A-36, M-42, V-181, B-1 and UM-55. By the second time around, it was V-181 (J. J. Hausmann) ahead of the Beulah fleet of Keck, Bitter, and Barr, then Tony Jewett (UM-55), P-1, E-99, C-52, V-101, M-19, V-800, A-136, UM-177 and M-42. At the finish, it was Bitter, Hausmann, Doug Mills (V-800), Barr, Keck, Huse, Tony Jewett, Peter Strothman (M-19), Jim Gluek (V-137), and E-99. It was a short quick race with good moments in a nice hiking breeze.

Race Two was off at 3:40pm on the restart under black flag. Boats starting most leeward held the advantage as they got south a little quicker than the guys near-middle, west looked good initially but faded. Again W 2 ½. First around were the Jewett’s (UM-7, then UM-55), Mark Prange (E-1), V-800, A-22 (Jim Tews), M-5 (Hans Zinn), P-1, C-52, P-21 (Mike Everist), M-19, and Z-100 (Steve Swift). Top mark now more east than Race One and deeper into shore, so it got a little goofy if only lighter when it came time to round. Those trying the port tack approach usually found no room. And if you made the tack-over successfully, your air was about to be turned-off by the faster fleet reaching down over you. Spectators loved it. Chris Jewett, now further ahead, lead the pack at the next windward turn, with Jerry Huse moving nicely into second, ahead of M-5, M-10 (David Strothman), V-800, E-99, E-1, B-1, Z-100, B-2, and UM-55. At the finish it was Jewett, then Chris Pinahs (E-99) who had cut-down UM-7’s lead, M-5, E-10 (Kurt Prange), A-22, V-800, E-1, B-2, OO-111 (Charlie Kilander), and M-10. Overall for the day, Doug Mills (V-800) leads, followed by Chris Pinahs, Peter Keck, Jerry Huse, Joe Bitter, Tony Jewett, Martin Barr, David Koch (V-101), Peter Strothman, and Scott Ripkey (I-101). Next race (9:30am Tuesday)………….…M. Kurzawa
