Big Inland 2000/Day
Nine/Monday/August 21,2000
John Porter (I-49) leads the
A-fleet after three races with a 2,1,2. Buddy Melges (I-1) is second with
finishes of 1,4,1 (after nipping the Porter team on the last run with better
gybe-angles). E-scow champ Rob Evans (M-100) is third with 3,3,4 and leading
Tom Burton (M-1) 6,4,5; Bill Mattison and Lon Schoor (H-714) 7,10,3 (leading at
Race Three’s first turn) and Dave Bohl’s "Piranha" guys (V-969)
4,6,13 who just couldn’t find the shifts today, with conditions most like their
home lake Pewaukee. Winds were generally south – which means they ranged from
the southwest to the southeast. Again, like so much of The Big Inland 2000
regatta, being in phase, taking what one can get, and some good fortune are
resulting in race wins. Boatspeed is always important. But sailing smart seems
to be ruling the day. Cocktail chat tells of passing the Melges
"Kanza" boat time and time again, but not at the finish. Three more
races to test everyone’s mettle.
The A-Class met to discuss proposals
for a lighter faster design…..with safety improvements for better vision with
the kite flying. We will let you know what we learn from the scuttlebutt.
Now back to the races.
More tomorrow…………………………………………M. Kurzawa
